THE OLD YEAR ENDS
The old year ends, and with it die the hopes,
The dreams, not yet reality,
And as our lives move on another year
Together, failures and achievements move into our history.
Tears are shed for those whose life has ended,
For their untimely death and for our loss.
Bitter-sweet are memories that come to us,
Hearts ache for those we cannot see but love the most.
Memories of happy days flood into our minds,
Of laughter and of celebrations with our friends.
These are the treasures none can take from us
And they will stay with us until our journey ends.
Regret for hasty words and our unfriendly silence
That we long to have once more.
To speak with tenderness and hear each other’s words.
Let friends and strangers find us kinder than before.
Yet with the New Year comes another chance,
To know ourselves forgiven and thus onward move.
To use each opportunity as best we can
And at year’s end look back and only see the love.
To bravely face whatever trials come our way,
To smile at others’ joy and share their tears.
To dream of justice, peace and liberty,
To live in harmony and banish all our fears.
This is the way to start another year,
To travel hopefully the appointed path,
To value every person we may meet
And start afresh each day, within our hearts.
