A CANDLE IN THE NIGHT
We lit a candle, strong and tall for Christ,
Light of the world; a sign for all to see.
The flame burned brightly, pointing upwards all the while,
The symbol of God's steadfastness and constancy.
Around the flame were smaller candles burning with our prayers.
Some danced and flickered, died, bowed down,
Were lit again; while others barely lit grew stronger as they burned,
Reflecting God's own light that shone around.
These candles could be us within our Church.
We bow beneath the wind of change and flicker in our loyalty.
Some flames are small, but they grow stronger with the years,
Responding to His Word, to prayer and our fidelity.
Sometimes our light goes out, we need once more to meet
The Saviour of our lives and share again
The radiance of His flame and that of others who burn brightly
In the darket night to share our pain.
And when some candles flare immediately and shed His glorious light,
Those of us with quieter faith are overwhelmed
And feel inadequate; and yet the brightest flame on earth
Is pale and weak compared to heavenly light in Jesus' realm.
Each one of us is part of God's infinite plan.
The small and meek will large and strong become
When our poor flickering flames unite with His,
And Jesus welcomes us to our eternal home.
And so for us, although we doubt and often feel we stand alone,
The precious promise still remains, and if we call,
God re-ignites us with His everlasting love,
He will not let His beloved children fall.
The path for Christ was clear. He knew His Father's will,
And He, for us, is like a candle in the night.
He burns to show the way that leads to eternal life,
Illuminating all our path with His unfailing light.
