AUTUMN
Along the hedgerows we see fruit and berries ripened by the sun,
And on the bushes, cobwebs delicately spun.
They glisten with the morning dew
On the rooftops, migrant birds are gathering for flight
Across the sea to warmer lands, yet still the midday sun is bright,
Denying golden days will soon be few.
Nights are drawing in and fires are lit against the Autumn chill.
We shut ourselves indoors and think of all the things that fill
A comfortable evening at home.
Photographs of holidays and souvenirs from places far away
Remind us of the things we did on long hot summer days
And evenings we spent outside long after light had gone.
We begin to think of Christmas and the preparation starts.
The cake is made, the pudding stirred and love re-kindled in our hearts
For friend and stranger in this season of goodwill.
As Autumn's chill turns into winter's cold, the old year ends again.
Log fires burn, while snowflakes fall and freezing rain
Is thrust along at the mercy of the North wind's mighty will.
Sheltered in the haven of our homes, we await the earliest sign of spring.
Snowdrops brave the fierce cold wind that through the trees will sing,
A sign of hope that winter's reign is through.
Our hearts rejoice again as we anticipate the growth of springtime flowers,
Fresh new leaves and buds appear on trees, and April showers
Seem to wash the sky, painting it bright blue.
